ACLU Statement in Anticipation of Mehserle Verdict
The shooting of Oscar Grant by BART police officers in January 2009 remains a tragic reminder of the need for serious efforts to rebuild trust between law enforcement and communities of color. No matter the verdict in the Mehserle trial, the need to rebuild community trust in law enforcement will remain. In too many American cities, racial tensions between the community and law enforcement run deep. Police oversight remains a critical issue in truly ensuring both public safety and public trust.

ACLU Files Lawsuit Challenging Unconstitutional "No Fly List"
The ACLU today filed a first-of-its-kind lawsuit on behalf of 10 U.S. citizens and lawful residents who are prohibited from flying to or from the United States or over U.S. airspace because they are on the government's "No Fly List." None of the individuals in the lawsuit, including a disabled U.S. Marine Corps veteran stranded in Egypt and a U.S. Army veteran stuck in Colombia, have been told why they are on the list or given a chance to clear their names.
ACLU Reaches Settlement on Behalf of Native American Students Impacted by School Closure
The ACLU of Northern California (ACLU-NC) has reached a settlement agreement with the Del Norte Unified School District in its class-action lawsuit on behalf of Native American students impacted by the closure of several grades at the only school teaching Yurok language and culture in the district. The suit, filed in 2007, charged that the district's closure of grades 6-8 of the Margaret Keating Elementary School on the Yurok reservation constituted racial discrimination against Native American students. The law firm Covington & Burling LLP worked with the ACLU-NC on the case on a pro bono basis. The settlement was reached without going to trial, and does not include monetary damages.
As Holiday Weekend Approaches, ACLU Issues Alert to California Residents Traveling to Arizona
The California affiliates of the ACLU issued a travel alert for persons traveling to Arizona along with "know your rights" materials explaining what to do in case of encounters with law enforcement. The alert was issued in response to Arizona's SB 1070 law which requires local law enforcement officials to demand "papers" from people they suspect are not authorized to be in the U.S. Individuals that local police presume to be immigrants are expected to be subject to warrantless arrest without any probable cause. The ACLU-NC holds that Arizona's law, which goes into effect on July 29, is unconstitutional, encourages targeting of persons who look or sound different, and is a betrayal of fundamental American values of fairness and equality.
